Local Volunteer Program - limited to the Atlanta area
Volunteers play an important role in our day-to-day operations, as well as with special events. We rely on and are grateful for the dedication of our wonderful team of volunteers!
Volunteers must be 18 years of age and are required to attend orientation and 4 days of lecture/handling classes. Participants must attend all 5 classes prior to volunteering. After completion of training, volunteers will join our Volunteer Support Team and work closely with our trainers to hone their training skills and learn our methodology. Various class schedules are offered by our trainers which include handling & bathing classes as well as outings. Upon approval of our training staff, volunteers move to the Certified Volunteer Handler team and support the trainers as they train, nurture, socialize and prepare our dogs to meet their recipients.
Volunteers can participate in the following areas:
-
Grooming
- grooming dogs to keep them healthy and beautiful.
-
Training sessions and outings
- reinforcing commands and taking dogs on public outings. Outings are
instrumental in exposing our dogs to a variety of environments, which
they will encounter once placed with a recipient
-
Home-visits
- Over night or weekend visits to help dogs acclimate to home
environment and generalize commands
-
Fostering
- Volunteers must be Certified Volunteer Handlers to assist with
this program. Volunteers are assigned a puppy at 10 weeks old
and work with that puppy until graduation. Volunteers assist
trainers with socialization, exercise and basic training.
-
Nursery Team
- After reaching the level of Certified Volunteer Handler volunteers
will have an opportunity to assist in the daily care and upkeep of our
0 – 7 week old puppies. They also participate in the socialization process.
-
Animal Assisted Education and Therapy -
- Give informational presentations about Canine Assistants to community organizations,
educational facilities, which includes a disability awareness presentation for children
- Participate in animal assisted therapy sessions at assisted living facilities & physical rehabilitation centers
